  • 22.11.2011 Most Bars In Marion County Could Be Smoke-free Soon

A surprise bid by the City-County Council president to pass a stronger smoking cigarettes ban covering bars and bowling alleys -- in the waning days of the Republican majority -- has caught two key groups off guard.Democrats had been making plans to push for an even stronger measure after they take control of the council Jan. 1. No matter who's in charge, their votes are vital for passage of an expanded smoking cigarettes ban in any form, since many Republicans are opposed. And anti-smoking cigarettes advocates called the move by Republicans -- with backing from Mayor Greg Ballard --...

  • 18.10.2011 Health Matters

Forty-seven years have passed since the surgeon general first reported that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer. Since that time, cigarettes use has greatly declined in Montana and across the nation. Much of this decline is attributed to tobacco-related policy implemented by federal and state governments.Evidence-based policies that decrease the number of youth who start using cheap cigarettes and increase the number of adults who quit using tobacco include: increasing the price of all tobacco products; eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke; and funding comprehensive tobacco-use...

Statewide Law

Despite a major thrust by the Mississippi Department of Health to discourage smoking cigarettes, the Legislature has refused to enact a statewide ban on smoking cigarettes in public places.

That needs to change.

The matter came up this week after Olive Branch enacted a partial smoking cigarettes ban for its restaurants and businesses. Horn Lake and Southaven are the last two of the five cities in DeSoto County that have not adopted any type of anti-smoking cigarettes laws.

But in Southaven, Mayor Greg Davis is refusing to enact a smoking cigarettes ban, despite some local businesses acting voluntarily.

Mayors can have a large effect on the health of their communities, according to Dr. Mary Currier, state health officer.

"By working for a smoke-free community, building more sidewalks and bike paths to promote exercise, bringing in more stores with fresh fruits and vegetables and so on. All this can have a real impact on whether a community is healthy," Currier has said.

At least 39 cities in the state have smoke-free ordinances. In the metro area, Hinds County's two largest cities, Jackson and Clinton, have passed bans on smoking cigarettes in public places. Madison, Ridgeland and Flora in Madison County and Pearl, Brandon and Flowood in Rankin County also have bans.

The Health Department is halfway into a two-year campaign to educate Mississippians about the dangers of secondhand smoke. The push hopefully will lead to a statewide smoke-free law .

According to the Health Department, smoking cigarettes accounts for an estimated 5,250 premature deaths in Mississippi each year, including 550 deaths among nonsmokers as a result of secondhand smoke.

cigarettes-related illnesses cost the state Medicaid system more than $264 million every year.

If the Legislature approved a ban, it would absolve politically reluctant mayors from having to take a stand and also make ordinances uniform.

"With a statewide policy, we could affect a lot of people's health," Currier told lawmakers in January.

It would be a breath of fresh air if lawmakers would listen and make Mississippi a smoke-free state.
