  • 22.11.2011 Most Bars In Marion County Could Be Smoke-free Soon

A surprise bid by the City-County Council president to pass a stronger smoking cigarettes ban covering bars and bowling alleys -- in the waning days of the Republican majority -- has caught two key groups off guard.Democrats had been making plans to push for an even stronger measure after they take control of the council Jan. 1. No matter who's in charge, their votes are vital for passage of an expanded smoking cigarettes ban in any form, since many Republicans are opposed. And anti-smoking cigarettes advocates called the move by Republicans -- with backing from Mayor Greg Ballard --...

  • 18.10.2011 Health Matters

Forty-seven years have passed since the surgeon general first reported that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer. Since that time, cigarettes use has greatly declined in Montana and across the nation. Much of this decline is attributed to tobacco-related policy implemented by federal and state governments.Evidence-based policies that decrease the number of youth who start using cheap cigarettes and increase the number of adults who quit using tobacco include: increasing the price of all tobacco products; eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke; and funding comprehensive tobacco-use...

St. Charles Official Trying To Tighten Area Smoking Bans

When it comes to smoking cigarettes bans across St. Louis, the rules are as cloudy as the air at a corner bar. So should smoking cigarettes restrictions in the St. Louis area be the same all across the region? That was the question posed at an informal meeting held Tuesday afternoon in Clayton.

Now that St. Charles County is poised to vote on a ban of its own, council chairman Joe Brazil, thinks it might be a better idea if all the counties in the region got together and created a uniform smoking cigarettes ban.

His particular preference would be one with no exemptions.

"It should be across the board, either you are pregnant or you are not pregnant, you can't be half pregnant," said Brazil.

Herb Krischke owns a South St. Louis tavern called The Trophy Room, which because of its small size and limited menu is currently exempt from St. Louis City's smoking cigarettes ban. And the idea of changing the law, especially to eliminate all exemptions, has him fuming.

"People will stay home if they can't smoke cigarettes anywhere in the St. Louis area. It will effect my business by 20%," said Krischke.

Brazil is actually against any kind of smoking cigarettes ban. But he says considering it seems inevitable that there will be more, at least, they ought to be consistent.

"It's a complete mess so if we are going to do it let's try to do it right," Brazil said.

Tuesday's meeting lasted less than 30 minutes, and involved only officials from St. Louis and St. Charles counties, but Brazil says he thinks it was a good first step.
