Forty-seven years have passed since the surgeon general first reported that smoking cigarettes causes lung cancer. Since that time, cigarettes use has greatly declined in Montana and across the nation. Much of this decline is attributed to tobacco-related policy implemented by federal and state governments.Evidence-based policies that decrease the number of youth who start using cheap cigarettes and increase the number of adults who quit using tobacco include: increasing the price of all tobacco products; eliminating exposure to secondhand smoke; and funding comprehensive tobacco-use...
The city of Morgantown is looking to ban smoking cigarettes in its bars and restaurants.
City council passed the first reading of an ordinance that would amend its clean air law to ban smoking cigarettes in all restaurants, bars, and workplaces within city limits Tuesday night.
Many residents at Tuesday night's council meeting spoke in favor of the proposed revision to the city's smoking cigarettes policy.
"If I were to go into a restaurant and sit down for 30 minutes, I'm exposed to as many carcinogens as a pack a day, that makes me not want to go into these types of establishments," said one resident at the meeting.
City council passed a clean air law in 1991 but exempted restaurants, bars, and private offices.
Supporters say an all-out ban would protect everyone from second-hand smoke.
"Although people have an individual right to smoke cigarettes in homes and private spaces or in open air areas, when you get in close spaces, the rights of the individual have to be balanced against the rights of other individuals who don't wish to breathe that smoke," said Mayor Bill Byrne.
Some Morgantown businesses have already gone smoke-free. Buffalo Wild Wings banned smoking cigarettes in December.
Other restaurants, like the Boston Beanery on High Street, still allow smoking cigarettes.
"I don't really like to be around it all the time, I've had some personal effects from it, but at the same time, it makes us money, so I cant fight it too much," said Jared Mazezka, manager at Boston Beanery.
Other bars and restaurants say a citywide ban would push patrons outside of the city.
"You're going to chase our customers out and what are we supposed to do financially to regain the revenue we would lose in such an instance," said Lou Scotchel, owner, Classics 3-Morgantown. Folks may not have a choice to go anywhere else. City leaders are hoping a ban in Morgantown would spread to all of Monongalia County.
In 2008, the city issued a resolution endorsing county commission efforts for a ban. The commission has never took up the issue.
"I think that what this will do is hopefully move the county towards reconsidering that issue that they have on their table," said Byrne.
The final vote will take place on June 21, and if passed, it would go into effect 60 later.
