When 14-year-old Ivy Ware arrived home Wednesday afternoon with his Mitchell High School yearbook, his mother eagerly flipped through the pages.
"I was very impressed with it," Melanie Ware said.
Then she arrived at Pages 20 and 21.
Ware hasn't gone any further.
Those two pages feature photographs and an article about students partaking in hookah smoking cigarettes an ancient form of smoking cigarettes from India and the Middle East.
The article was titled: "When Things Get Hazy."
"I looked at this and said, 'Holy cow,' " Ware said Thursday.
To Ware and her husband, the hookah apparatus looked like drug paraphernalia. They thought it an inappropriate topic for a high school yearbook and a bad influence for students who aren't involved in hookah smoking cigarettes, but could be drawn to it as a result of the article.
"It's disturbing to me," Ware said. "I really don't understand the point they are trying to make."
Over the last few years, hookah smoking cigarettes has become a popular activity among young people in their late teens and early 20s.
Hookahs usually consists of a bowl, where flavored cheap cigarettes is heated with embers or charcoal; a water-filled base; a pipe; and a hose.
When the smoker inhales, the cigarettes smoke cigarettes is sucked from the bowl in the water-filled base. Then the smoke cigarettes bubbles up through the water and through the hose to the smoker.
The World Health Organization has said hookah smoking cigarettes comes with health risks similar to, and perhaps greater than, smoking cigarettes cigarettes. The yearbook article touches on the health concerns.
Ware said her husband called the school to complain about the article and talked with an assistant principal. She said the assistant principal defended the article.
Ware, who has lived in Pasco County for four years, said she attended public schools in her native Mississippi and wants to support the public schools here. Mitchell High's decision to feature hookah in the yearbook is making her rethink that view, though.
"This has not got my children's best interests at heart," she said. "What's going to be in next year's (yearbook)?"
Principal Jim Michaels said Thursday that he does not condone the photographs, but he said the school allows some editorial freedom for both the yearbook and the school newspaper.
He said the yearbook staff wanted to show a slice of teenage life.
Still, he said he could understand why a parent would be concerned by what is depicted.
"I am not overly pleased with the article," Michaels said.
Ware isn't satisfied with that response.
"People wonder why people home school," she said. "The complacency is killing me around here."
Ware said she hopes that, by her raising awareness, better decisions will be made about yearbook content in the future.
"I don't want to just stir the pot," she said. "I want to have some impact."
