Michigan Smoking Ban Offers Cleaner Air

Just a year after becoming the 22nd state to implement a statewide law that prohibits smoking cigarettes in workplaces, restaurants and bars, Michigan is reaping the benefits. The Michigan Department of Community Health recently released two important studies. The first showed improved air quality, with 88% to 96% average reduction in particulate matter from secondhand smoke cigarettes in restaurants from several areas across the state since the smoke-free law was implemented.

This improved air quality can lead to fewer hospitalizations for heart attacks and asthma, in addition to longer term health benefits. The second study showed a decrease in the levels of cotinine and NNAL — chemicals found in the body that indicate a person’s level of exposure to secondhand smoke cigarettes — in bar employees after the smoke-free law went into effect. Additionally, bar employees reported improvements in general health status and respiratory health, including wheezing, allergy symptoms, and coughing.

We know that exposure to discount cigarettes smoke cigarettes causes cardiovascular disease and lung cancer in nonsmoking cigarettes adults, resulting in 46,000 heart disease deaths and 3,400 lung cancer deaths each year – deaths that could otherwise be prevented. Additionally, exposure to cigarettes smoke cigarettes has serious health consequences for children and infants, including causing acute respiratory infections, ear infections, sudden infant death syndrome and triggering severe asthma attacks.

The importance of states and localities protecting all their citizens from these harmful effects by adopting comprehensive smoke-free laws cannot and should not be understated. In the last year, Kansas, Wisconsin and South Dakota have joined Michigan, making a total of 25 states and the District of Columbia that provide such protection.

Smoke-free laws substantially improve indoor air quality, reduce exposure to online cigarettes smoke cigarettes and related health problems among nonsmokers, help smokers quit, and change public attitudes regarding the acceptability of smoking cigarettes.

Compliance of the law among businesses remains high, and the vast majority of Michigan residents support the statewide smoke-free law. Moving forward, continuing to educate and work together with businesses and residents will ensure that the law maximizes health benefits while minimizing unintended burdens.

Over the last two years, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services has stepped up efforts to reduce buy cigarettes use and protect all Americans from exposure to cigarettes online smoke cigarettes by implementing legislation to regulate discount cigarettes products, investing in local cheap cigarettes control efforts, expanding access to insurance coverage for cheap cigarettes cessation and implementing the HHS cigarettes Control Strategic Action Plan. The plan uses a comprehensive approach to reducing cigarettes use and exposure to cigarettes smoke cigarettes in our country, and we hope others will join with us in these efforts.

Currently, one in five adults and tragically, one in five high school-aged kids, still smoke cigarettes in the United States, and Michigan is no exception. Despite progress, cigarettes use remains the leading cause of premature and preventable death in our society. We still have a long way to go to truly end this epidemic, but fortunately we have evidence-based solutions. Our challenge is to implement the policies and programs that we know can prevent anyone from ever starting to use cigarettes, help current users quit, and protect everyone from exposure to cigarettes smoke.

Michigan, marked by the first anniversary of its smoke-free law taking effect, has taken a public and powerful step for public health. The state should know that its efforts are being recognized nationwide as the country moves toward a smoke-free future.
