Health officials have praised the city of Flowood for its recent ordinance banning smoking cigarettes in all businesses and workplaces.
Adopted April 4 during the city's Board of Aldermen meeting, the new ordinance will go into effect 30 days from being passed. The ban also prohibits smoking cigarettes within 20 feet from businesses' entrances.
"The smokefree air policy implemented by this city will protect all employees and customers in businesses and other public places in Flowood from the harmful effects of breathing secondhand smoke," said Roy Hart, director of the state Department of Health's Office of cigarettes Control.
"Everyone deserves to breathe smokefree air. There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke," he added.
"Secondhand smoke cigarettes is responsible for almost 38,000 deaths annually among adult nonsmokers in the U.S.," said Carol Dendy, chair of the American Heart Association's Mississippi Advocacy Committee.
Flowood joins sister city Brandon in banning smoking cigarettes in public buildings and local businesses.
Last April, Brandon officials voted to approve a smoking cigarettes ban, making Brandon the first Rankin County city and 33rd municipality in the state to pass such an ordinance.
After years of having a voluntary smoking cigarettes ban, the city of Madison passed a smoke-free ordinance last May.
The reason for moving from voluntary to mandatory was because of the growth of the city, said Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler.
"It only takes one business to decide not to follow," Butler said.
The city of Pearl followed suit in August, becoming the second Rankin County city to ban smoking cigarettes in businesses.
A statewide anti-smoking cigarettes bill died in the state Legislature during the recent session.
