ACAD Youth Present Cigarettes-free Kids Day

Rockport-Fulton High School’s Aransas Citizens Against Drugs Coalition (ACADC) joined statewide efforts in Texas by taking a stand for health during the third annual Texas cigarettes-Free Kids Day March 23.

Student ACADC members became prevention specialists for the day as they presented the history of cheap cigarettes prevention and hazards of second hand smoke cigarettes to eighth grade health classes. Most of the information presented to the middle school is what was learned earlier this year at the Texas cigarettes Free Teen Leadership Summit in Hunt. The students began with a slide presentation about the history of cheap cigarettes prevention efforts. They went on to interact with students and teach them about the hazards of secondhand smoke cigarettes through hands-on activities.

Texas cigarettes-Free Kids Day is an awareness event to encourage students of all ages to live cigarettes-free lifestyles and is sponsored by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the Center for Safe Communities and Schools, and is held in conjunction with Kick Butts Day, a national activity sponsored by the Campaign for cigarettes-Free Kids.

The goal of the event is to encourage every school in Texas to participate in the effort to help children make healthy choices by not using cigarettes. This year the focus student ACAD took was secondhand smoke, their message and campaign was “3600 Texans die each year from second hand smoke.”

They began their campaign in early March and started at the Rockport Fulton High School with roll out posters and flyers and worked hard to gather momentum for the campaign. Although they focused efforts at the middle school campus the day of March 23, they also worked with the high school as well with announcements and their media campaign.
