There is a tradition to overindulge kids. They are allowed to do pretty much whatever they want. Sometimes, though, it becomes deadly dangerous. One of the examples of seemingly harmless kid’s "game" nowadays is consuming nasvai. A while ago this substance was not considered dangerous but now medical doctors in Central Asia are on alert. There are obvious reasons for that. Have you ever seen teenagers, who while chewing something in disco bars or during rock concerts, where alcohol is not allowed, were getting extremely "cheerful" and noisy? With almost 100% awareness in this case you can state that "kids" are affected by nasvai- the mixture of tobacco or the plant, called "nas", special Central Asian makhorka, slaked lime, plant’s ash, and, as one of the most exotic components, chicken droppings and camel’s excrements. There are different kinds of nasvai - nasvai from Tashkent, Fergana, Andijan.… In Central Asia it is also called "hookah for the poor". Recently, I, myself, witnessed, 2 soldiers (Ministry of Defense stuffers) ordering nasvai in the house of one … wealthy official. When I asked them "Why nasvai instead of cigarettes?" the reply was that nasvai "kicks" much better. Lately nasvai has, indeed, become a scourge for colleges in Kyrgyzstan. Especially in the southern regions of the country. According to local traditions adults here don’t pay any attention at chewing children. Some of them are even proud that ancestor’s traditions are "preserved" this way. In southern schools where students are extremely active in consuming nasvai, the halls of the buildings often turn green because of the specific smoke plus it smells like hen coop. Green «flat cakes» that are seemingly left by some unknown animals cover the floors. Regular clean ups don’t really help in dealing with this new fashion of our generation next. One of the reasons for the growing popularity of nasvai is its low price. It can be compared to the price of sunflower seeds. In Kazakhstan for instance you can pay 10 American cents and get a pack of nasvai consisting of 30 portions. In Kyrgyzstan you can purchase the very same pack for only 5 American cents. When nasvai gets transported to Russia its price "skyrockets" as high as $3 for the pack. According to the statistics of the Association of Russia’s Tobacco Distributors "Grandtobacco" 67 tons of the chewing tobacco "nasvai" was imported to Russia in 2004. In Kyrgyzstan southern bazaars cater nasvai alongside with cigarettes and sunflower seeds. The composition of nasvai is getting "perfected" every day. One of the recent recipes is nasvai made of tobacco dust mixed with glue, slaked lime, water and oil. It is typically called Fergana chewing gum. The main consumers of nasvai are teenagers 12 to 15 years old. The most disturbing thing in this case is that the society in Central Asia is getting used to the tradition of consuming nasvai. Neither kids nor their parents and teachers know what kind of harm can be caused by this cigarettes’ substitute. There is a misconception that nasvai’s consumption can only cause some short-term problems. Headaches, apathy, wetting, heartburn are among them. According to specialists, though, nasvai consumption can cause far more serious problems such as tongue and lips cancer. Providing the fact that nasvai consists of animals’ excrement it also contains bacteria that can cause virus hepatitis. Nowadays nasvai consumers are the hostages of drug dealers. The latter category uses the fact that none of nasvai components is prohibited. Dwelling on this theory they create a fashionable drug that is neither prohibited nor expensive. Those trying to curb nasvai consumption emphasize that formally there are no laws that could be of help in this fight. Law enforcement bodies keep stating that nasvai is not a drug and, thus, there are no reasons to prohibit its retail. No official study on nasvai consumption has been conducted plus no official decrees have been issued. Thus, it is evident that the hiatus in the legislature of Central Asian countries can cause real problems in the nearest future. While businessmen keep transforming animal’s excrements into own benefits, almost no one is bothered by the fact that the whole generation of nasvai addicts can be produced because of our today’s negligence.
