Tobacco numbers need closer scrutiny

Dec 13, 2006, 17:15

I was reading the newspaper from Roswell the other day when something caught my eye. This article went on to explain how, without fanfare or much ado, the tobacco companies have done something for, or to (I'm not sure which,) their customers. "A new report shows that between 1998 and 2004 changes in the design of cigarettes have increased the amount of nicotine smokers suck out of cigarettes, by an average of 10 percent. In the case of one brand Doral, made by R.J. Reynolds it went up a whopping 36 percent." This information came from the Massachusetts Department of Health, but it is straight from the manufacturers. As part of the huge multi-state suit of tobacco companies settled in 1998, they are required to report how much nicotine their cigarettes yield to Massachusetts health officials. The amount of nicotine in the most popular brands, such as Marlboro, Newport, and Camel, also increased significantly. That includes all types of cigarettes: regular, light, and ultra-lights. A decade ago, the U.S. Food and Drug administration classified cigarettes as a "drug delivery device" and tried to regulate the sale and manufacture of cigarettes. That effort failed.
