As the Government debates a possible smoking ban in public places across the country the Cayman Islands Rugby Union Federation (CRFU) has taken the initiative and introduced a no-smoking policy in their South Sound club house. CRFU President, Derek Haines, said the policy was in line with the development of the club as a very much family-oriented organisation. "We have the youth training programme, families, nursing mothers and an increasing number of non-smokers using the facilities so the move makes sense. The CRFU is also very conscious of health and safety issues, including the effect of passive smoking on staff at the club," said Mr Haines who added that the change was the result of a unanimous decision by the committee and has been enthusiastically accepted by everyone who uses the club, including smokers. "It is seen as part of general change in public attitude, with people recognising the dangers of smoking and accepting that it is regarded as an anti-social habit. There is also acceptance of the health benefits of not smoking from an athletic point of view. My only regret is that we did not make the move earlier," said Mr Haines. He also noted that everyone is still welcome at the club but anyone who wants to smoke will now have to do it outside. The club joins a growing lists of bars, restaurants and resorts across the Cayman Islands that are adopting a no-smoking policy and providing cleaner environments for the staff as well as the customers. Spurred on by the majority of its guests, the Grand Cayman Marriott Beach Resort decided to become a 100 percent smoke-free property from Sunday, 15 October 2006 and the list continues to grow; from District 6 to the Ritz, Cayman is stubbing out cigarettes in public places.
