School Board bans tobacco on property

LUTCHER — The St. James Parish School Board declared its facilities a no-smoking zone and banned possession of cigarettes, cigars, pipes or any other form of tobacco or smoking paraphernalia on school district property. According to the new policy manual adopted Tuesday, employees may not have smoke-related products in their possession while on school property. A smoking ban has existed for several years at the school district’s sporting events, such as basketball, baseball and football games. The board also approved a policy that forbids school employees from accepting gifts of any value from firms doing business with the school district. "Acceptance of personal gifts by any board member or employee of the St. James Parish School Board from persons or firms doing business with the School Board or any department or school thereof is prohibited," the policy states. Exceptions were granted for board members accepting campaign contributions for use in meeting campaign expenses. Former elected officials are prohibited from working for the school system for a period of two years from the date they leave public office, according to the new policy. From now on, new employees must undergo criminal background checks and under circumstances listed in the policy directives they may be denied employment with the district if a criminal record is found. All School Board employees will be required to inform the school district of any criminal conviction within 48 hours of conviction. The board also heard from board member George Nassar regarding the performance of Romeville Elementary School. The school surpassed its targeted growth specified by the Louisiana Department of Education, Nassar said. Romeville has historically been the lowest performing school in the district. "The teachers are working really hard and this is a credit to their hard work," Nassar said. "This little school is doing lots of things well and people are beginning to see the results."
