The hospital in Plattsburgh marked the Great American Smokeout Thursday with a new pledge to stamp out cigarettes. The plan is to make the entire Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital campus a smoke-free zone by this time next year. Hospital officials want their patients, visitors and employees to be free from the effects of tobacco smoke. "We will be doing things during the interim to remind people this is coming. We and our foundation will be offering a number of programs and stepping up the number of smoke withdrawal classes they offer," explained CVPH spokesman Mike Hildebrand. Eight other New York hospitals have made a similar pledge. Fletcher Allen in Burlington has been smoke-free for five years. But the hospital announced Thursday it will begin strictly enforcing the rules.
