MONTPELIER, Vt.—Starting on July 1, Vermont smokers are going to have to dig deeper into their pockets to light up.
more stories like this.

The state tax on cigarettes is going to increase from $1.79 a pack to $1.99.

Once the higher tax is implemented, Vermont will have the 11th highest tobacco tax in the United States.

Over the last two decades Vermont has been steadily raising its cigarette tax. And during that time the number of smokers has dropped from about a quarter of the population to 18 percent.

It's hoped the new tax will keep young people from picking up the habit.

Revenue raised from the tax will help fund state health care programs.
