This was disclosed by the acting minister of health, Dr. Hassan Muhammad Lawal, to mark 2008 World No Tobacco Day yesterday. Lawal said that people that smoke today (about 650 million people) would eventually die of tobacco, related causes, 40 per cent from cancer, 35 per cent from heart disease and stroke, 25 per cent from lung diseases. "Experts say every cigarette smoked takes seven minutes off a smoker’s life and someone dies from tobacco-related ailment every eight seconds". He said that tobacco is the leading preventable cause of death in the world and it is the only legal consumer product that kills one third to one half of those who use it as intended by its manufacturers with it's victims dying on average of 15 years prematurely. The World Health Organisation (WHO) representative, Dr. Lola Sadiq, said that in a WHO world wide school-based study of 13-15 year olds, more than 55 per cent of students reported seeing advertisements for cigarettes on billboards in the previous month, while 20 per cent owned an item with a cigarette brand logo on it. "The younger the children are, when they first try smoking, th more likely they are to become regular tobacco users and the less likely they are willing to quit." The WHO representative urged countries to ratify or accede to the WHO Framework convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) as soon as possible, to fully implement and enforce its provisions and to actively involve civil society in this process. Sadiq also appealed to member states and policy makers to enact a law that gives a comprehensive ban on all forms of advertising, promotion and sponsorship of tobacco products. Therefore, the acting health minister called for a more efficient and effective enforcement of the ban of smoking in public places considering the decree no 20 of 1990. © Copyright 2006 by DiscountCigarettesBox.Com Top of Page |
