It has emerged that more than 100 million illegal cigarettes are being sold in South Africa every year, resulting in a loss of about R1.4 billion in government revenue. These statistics were tabled at a meeting held by representatives of the legal tobacco industry, the government and law enforcement agencies to combat the illicit trade in tobacco products. South Africa Tobacco Institute CEO Francois van der Merwe says most of the illegal trade occurs through smuggling from the Far East. "You have problems at the border posts with the controls that are not so good and customs officials that are not always up to speed. So that is why one of our initiatives (is) to work with the government to give training at border posts specifically and ports of entry -- to teach people and to train them to learn the difference between legal and illegal products," he said.
