Japan Tobacco International signs deal with EU to combat cigarette smuggling

BRUSSELS (Thomson Financial) - Japan Tobacco International (JTI) will sign a 15-year agreement with the European Commission today to combat cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting, the European Commission says.
JTI will work together with the commission, its anti-fraud office OLAF, and law enforcement authorities of 26 of the bloc''s 27 member states in the fight against contraband, including the problem of counterfeit cigarettes.
This agreement comes after two years of negotiations and includes a substantial financial contribution from JTI, totalling 400 mln usd over 15 years.
