Clerks cited for selling cigarettes to minors

Jul 4, 2008, 11:17

Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) agents have been checking stores which sell tobacco products in an effort to find clerks selling the products to minors in Eastern North Carolina.

Agents checked 120 retail stores in the past three months in Beaufort, Carteret, Craven, Pamlico, Pitt and Wilson counties.

Fifteen store clerks were cited for selling tobacco to minors.

Among those cited were Food Lion #1332 at 101 Greenfield Heights Blvd. in Havelock and Mac's Mini Mart at 905 Broad St., Oriental. Store clerks can identify an underage person by the red border around the driver's license indicating the person is under the age of 18.

The punishment for a clerk who is convicted of selling tobacco to a minor can be a fine up to $1,000, or community punishment of up to 30 days if the clerk has no prior convictions. If the clerk has prior convictions, he or she could serve time in jail.
