Charges roll after cops seize bulk tobacco

Aug 17, 2007, 16:09

RCMP said they're seeing an increase in bulk contraband tobacco after seizing more than 1,000 kg of it Wednesday east of Cornwall. Police from the Central St. Lawrence Valley detachment were conducting a smuggling operation in the early morning hours when they stopped a 1994 Econoline van near Ormstown, Que. Inside the van, police found 1,052 kg of fine-cut tobacco used to make cigarettes. According to police, the tobacco was inside black plastic garbage bags, which didn't bear the necessary stamps. Police said the tobacco, which originated from the U.S., was worth $94,725. The 57-year-old man from Kahnawake, Que., who was driving the van is charged with possession of tobacco not property stamped under the Excise Act. Quebec provincial police are also charging the driver under the Tobacco Tax Act. The RCMP seized the van, valued at $1,000. Police said tobacco importers must pay excise duties and taxes before the Canada Border Services Agency will release the products. Laws make it mandatory that commercial quantities of cigarettes are stamped and packaged.
